At least nine people were killed and another ten injured in an attack by twelve armed men on a tavern in the municipality of Bekkersdal, about 40 kilometers west of Johannesburg in South Africa.
“The Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Investigation Unit, together with the Crime Tracking and Detection Unit, have begun the search for the suspects involved in a multiple shooting that took place in Bekkersdal in the early hours of December 21, 2025. The incident left nine dead and ten injured,” the African country’s police reported.
Around 1:00 p.m. (local time), twelve armed people got out of a white van and a silver vehicle and opened fire on people who were in a bar. The shooting continued as the attackers fled the scene.
The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Police said the tavern had all permits.
Currently, the reasons for the attack are unknown and police forces have deployed “all necessary resources” to investigate the incident. “Anyone who has information that could help clarify the matter can contact the criminal police,” it said.
