Australian police have confirmed that two people have been arrested following an alleged shooting this morning against beachgoers at Australia’s Bondi Beach in Sydney, which left at least four people injured, according to the New South Wales state emergency service.
“There are two people in custody at Bondi Beach,” New South Wales State Police reported on their X account, “but the police operation continues and we urge the public to avoid the area.”
So far, no police official has wanted to confirm the number of victims of this attack, and the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, is already informed in detail of the evolution of the incident, a spokesperson confirmed to the Australian channel ABC.
In recent minutes, the Prime Minister issued a statement regretting the “shocking and distressing scenes that occurred in Bondi” and confirmed injuries following the event.
“Police and emergency services are working on the ground to save lives. My condolences go out to everyone affected. We are working with NSW Police and will provide further updates as more information is confirmed,” he said.
The New South Wales Ambulance Service confirmed to the same media that there were at least four people hospitalized in three hospitals in the region (St. Vincent, Royal Prince Alfred and St. George).
Many witnesses confirmed to the country’s media that it was a shooting carried out by a still unknown number of armed people, but the authorities have not confirmed this aspect either.
The beach, they point out, was partly the scene of a celebration of the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, which begins this Sunday.
