At least two workers at a coal mine in the town of Pawlowice in southern Poland have died in a methane explosion, the company that manages the Pniowek mine reported on Tuesday.
The company Jastrzebska Spólka Weglowa (JSW) said in a statement that the explosion occurred at a depth of about 900 meters and stated that “a large amount of methane was released as a result of the deflagration.”
Furthermore, he explained that there were a dozen miners underground at the time of the incident, eight of whom managed to get to safety. However, two workers aged 40 and 41 remained incommunicado.
Search and rescue teams then managed to recover their bodies after seven hours of operations. His death brings to 15 the number of miners who have died in accidents at mines across the country this year, according to the Polish Mining Authority.
