
The latest clashes recorded in the border between Thailand and Cambodia left at least ten dead and dozens injured in both countrieswho noted an increase in violence after Thai forces attacked Cambodian positions this weekend after denouncing the death of one of their soldiers at the hands of the neighboring country’s troops.
The Thai army, based in nearly thirty injuredsaid two other soldiers died in the Cambodian province of Preah Vihear, where they were hit by artillery fire. Thus, he indicated that the deceased are Wayu Kwansue and Chawakorn Detchkhunthot, who died due to the seriousness of the injuries suffered during these clashes. These deaths are in addition to that of another soldier who died the day before.
Tension continues to grow in the region despite the international community calling on both countries stick to the agreements reached this summer and proceed with caution. The Cambodian authorities, for their part, reported seven deaths and nearly twenty injured on their territory and “strongly” condemned the attacks which they described as “inhuman and brutal”.

In the statement, Phnom Penh reiterated that the neighboring country “violated the ceasefire” and the joint declaration of October 26, “by carrying out another armed aggression against (its) territorial integrity”, for which it urged Bangkok to “re-implement” the truce then concluded in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
Despite this, he assured that the Cambodian forces “continue to respect and relentlessly implement all decisions of the Government (…) of Cambodia to resolve the problem peacefully, in accordance with international law, in order to protect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of the Cambodian people.”
These victims join four others killed and nine injured at the hands of the Thai army against the areas of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey, on the border between the two countries. after reporting attacks by Cambodian troopswhich reportedly left a Thai soldier dead and several injured; information rejected by Phnom Penh.
The situation has led thousands of residents to evacuate border districts given the possibility of a resurgence of attacks, according to information from the newspaper ‘The Khmer Times’, while the authorities of Vietnam and the European Union have called for caution and containment.
António Guterres’ reaction
The Secretary General of the United Nations declared to the same effect in recent hours: Antonio Guterreswhich urged Thailand and Cambodia to “exercise restraint and avoid further escalation.” In the words of its spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, it showed “concerned due to (…) the new armed clashes between Cambodia and Thailand, in particular air attacks and the mobilization of heavy equipment in the border area” and regretted that “Victims and displacements are already numerous on both sides of the border“.
In this sense, he reminded the two governments that “They must protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian aid“, asked them to “return to the framework of the agreement” signed in the Malaysian capital and expressed the organization’s desire to “support all efforts aimed at promoting peace (…) in the region”.
