
American authorities continue the search for the perpetrator of last Saturday’s shooting at Brown University in Providence (Rhode Island), where At least two people died and eight others were injured. The victims are a young woman from Birmingham, Alabama, Ella Cook, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, a student from Uzbekistan.
The Rev. Craig Smalley, of Birmingham’s Advent Cathedral, announced at a mass Sunday the death of Cook, one of his parishioners, whom he described as “an incredible, sensible, faithful and brilliant light.” For their part, Aziz’s family describes him on the GoFundMe platform as a “kind, funny and intelligent” person. “I dreamed of being a neurosurgeon. He always helped anyone who needed it and was the kindest person our family has ever known,” said those close to him.
Meanwhile, authorities continue to search for the shooter after releasing a preliminary suspect on Sunday. At a press conference, Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez explained that “a specific clue” but after examining all the evidence, it was concluded that the inmate was not the perpetrator of the shooting. “Research will tell us whether or not something is valid or whether something should be discarded. It’s not a mistakethat’s how investigations work,” he added.
For his part, Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said he has been in his position “long enough to know that sometimes you go in one direction and so you gotta regroup and get another one“: “This is exactly what happened in the last 24 hours.” Authorities, however, indicated that the video posted on their networks in which a suspect is seen walking on the sidewalk in a hat and a dark-colored coat still valid.
In addition, they said they are looking for more videos and images recorded by security cameras that could serve as a clue in finding the perpetrator of the crime. Thus, the Providence Police specified in its X profile that the investigation “stay active”and emphasized that after the shooting, “no specific threats against our community” were received.
For its part, the university emphasized this Monday in X that the center is try “as much as possible” to ensure the safety of its members and recommended that students and workers act with caution in their activities on campus.
