Apple Music comes natively to GM cars via over-the-air update, aiming to ease controversial decision to ditch CarPlay
When General Motors decided to ditch Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its electric vehicles, the reaction was immediate – and strong. For many drivers, especially those most connected to the Apple ecosystem, the absence of CarPlay sounded like a setback that was difficult to swallow. Now, GM is taking a calculated step to reduce that resistance: a deal with Apple to integrate Apple Music directly into its cars’ infotainment systems.
The news comes via an over-the-air update and is starting to appear on 2025 and newer Chevrolet and Cadillac models. First, names like Cadillac CT5, Escalade IQ, and Vistiq are on the list, along with popular electric vehicles like Blazer EV, Equinox EV, and Silverado EV. Little by little, the promise is to extend this functionality to the rest of the GM range, including GMC and Buick.
It is important to clarify: this is not a return of CarPlay through the back door. GM remains firm in its decision to invest in its own system, deeply integrated into the car and the brand’s services. The company even took steps to prevent alternatives that attempted to run CarPlay on the gambiarra. Still, bringing Apple Music natively is a strategic concession, which makes sense.
