The third film in the Avatar franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ashes, arrived in theaters on December 18 and is making waves on social media. Indeed, after the end of the third film, fans wonder if the story will have sequels.
Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 have already been announced by Disney, with premieres planned for 2029 and 2031 respectively. However, the franchise’s continuity is directly dependent on the performance of Avatar: Fire and Ashes at the box office, according to an interview with the film’s director, James Cameron.

According to the filmmaker, Fire and Ashes concludes the central arc begun in 2009, centered on the trajectory of the Sully family. “We always knew that Fire and Ashes would be the end of a story cycle, a story arc,” Cameron said in an interview with Deadline.
Despite the uncertainty regarding the new films, the director has already shot some scenes for the sequel. This decision was motivated by a significant time jump planned for the fourth film, which features young characters.

Cameron also revealed that he has written the scripts for the upcoming stories and has already been thinking about ideas for the future of the franchise, should they decide on more films. However, the director said he is not thinking about sequels yet.
“It’s hard for me to think about it now. I always use the metaphor that, if a woman is in labor, at the moment when the baby’s head is crowning, she is not asked about her next children,” the filmmaker emphasized in the same interview.
The first Avatar film grossed over $2.9 billion worldwide, while The Way of Water grossed approximately $2.3 billion, placing both films among the highest-grossing films in cinematic history.
