
Basketball player Nicolas Ramírez Pérez, 22, died Monday evening after being hit by a high-speed passenger train at a rural station near Zaragoza, northern Spain. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, but did not survive his injuries.

According to the English newspaper The Sun, the train was carrying more than 100 passengers at the time of the accident. The circumstances of the collision are still under investigation.
Pérez was heading to training when the tragedy occurred. The athlete was defending CB Octavus de Utebo, a club in the Zaragoza region, which announced the suspension of all league matches scheduled for this weekend, as a sign of mourning.
“Due to the great loss suffered and as a mark of respect for this tragic event, all matches scheduled for this weekend have been suspended,” the club said in a statement. The team also canceled most practice activities.
In an official statement, the Octavus Basketball Club lamented the death of the athlete and expressed solidarity with the family. “On behalf of the entire family that makes up the club, we express our support and our deepest condolences to Nico’s family and friends. He will always be part of this club.”
The Aragon Regional Basketball Federation also spoke out, highlighting the impact of this defeat on local sport. “We send our most sincere condolences to the family, friends and companions of Nicolas Ramírez Pérez,” the organization said.
