The First Vice President and Minister of Culture and Language Policy, Ibone Bengoetxea, called this Friday on Basque politicians to be careful so that the Basque Country is not “contaminated with Spanish-style politics”.
Bengoetxea made these statements after the president of the Basque PP, Javier de Andrés, predicted the political “extinction” of EH Bildu yesterday. These words will be analyzed by the sovereigntist party to consider whether it could take legal and political action.
In an interview with Radio Euskadi compiled by Europa Press, the adviser pointed out that we must be “careful” so that the Basque Country “does not become contaminated with Spanish-style politics,” since there is also another way to do politics.
Understand and respect your opponent
“I believe that one way of doing Basque politics, which is always recognized when we leave our borders, is that we are able to have a political debate at a high level, that we are able to understand and respect the opponent, and in addition, of course, we are also able to understand that we as a government understand that the political opponent always makes suggestions that help us improve,” he explained.
In his opinion, “we must be very careful with these attempts to lead to polarization and permanent confrontation.” “Permanent confrontation produces no consensus, no suggestions and, above all, no trust among citizens.”
In response, he therefore said that “the only thing I have to say” is that there is a government in Euskadi that is in dialogue “with an outstretched hand”. “Our values are different,” he assured, recalling the proposal for the “democratic renewal” of the Lehendakari, Imanol Pradales, at the beginning of the legislative period, “sticking to what the people want,” that there is dialogue and agreement.
