However, even though he lived on the Mediterranean island with his family from the age of eight, his origins lie on the other side of the Atlantic. The singer came into the world in Mar del Plata, a coastal city in Argentina with a vibrant atmosphere and full of tourist attractions.
The origins of Mar del Plata
The first settlers who occupied the lands on which Mar del Plata stands today were the indigenous tribes that the Spanish named pampas. The first European to reach the shores of Mar del Plata was Ferdinand Magellan in 1519, giving way to other explorers who attempted to establish a permanent population, as in the case of a Jesuit mission which eventually withdrew in 1751.
We now move on to the year 1857, when a Brazilian-Portuguese consortium installed a salt pond in the area, around which a small nucleus began to develop. However, it was not until 1874 that the place was officially recognized as a commune. Little by little, driven by the arrival of the railway, Mar del Plata was transformed into a modern urban center. Likewise, it became a popular vacation destinationand the first hotels begin to be built.
A rich heritage
Even today, Mar del Plata remains a dynamic and lively city, a busy destination, especially during the summer months. Its architectural heritage surprises us with buildings like the Monk’s Dungeona building with Gothic influences built in 1904 and which today serves as a cafeteria and restaurant. On the other hand, there is the Provincial Museum of Contemporary Artopened in 2013 as one of the largest and most modern museums in the country.
Likewise, we find old houses transformed into museums and cultural centers, such as Villa Victoria (Victoria Ocampo Cultural Center), Villa Miter (Don Roberto T. Barili Municipal Historical Museum) and Villa Ortiz Basualdo (Juan Pablo Castagnino Art Museum).
Beaches for all tastes
In Mar del Plata we can enjoy 47 kilometers of coastline lots of beaches very different from each other and for all tastes. For example, on its varied coastline, those of The Pearl; those of Varese and Cabo Corrientes, and those of the Center, the latter being located in the main hotel and gastronomic district of the city.
On the other hand, Playa Grande is the most frequented by surfersand the city is an ideal destination for surfing the waves. In addition, here we can practice other sports such as paragliding, golf, stand up paddle…And of course we can’t forget the harbor sea lion reservewhere you can see these curious animals in the wild.
Finally, its gastronomy also worth mentioning. The city offers us first-rate culinary proposals, such as traditional recipes based on fish and seafood, and desserts as delicious as artisanal ice cream, croissants and classics caramel cookies.
