US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said there would be one or two more interviews this week to choose the next chairman of the Federal Reserve (Fed), and said President Donald Trump was expected to announce his choice in early January. “It’s on the president’s beat,” Bessent told Fox Business on Tuesday, without specifying who should be interviewed. The term of current Fed Chairman Jerome Powell ends in May 2026.
Trump was “very direct with the candidates during interviews, asking their views on Fed policy, the structure of the Fed, next steps and the economy,” Bessent said. The Treasury chief said National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett and former Fed Director Kevin Warsh were “very, very qualified.” Trump said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal on Friday that both were his top choices. Bessent further rejected “this idea that Kevin Hassett should be disqualified” due to concerns that he does not have the autonomy to make his own decisions.
