The leader of the Galician socialists, José Ramón Gómez Besteiro, has broken the silence on the complaint of sexual harassment which caused the fall of José Tomé, one of his main collaborators. The secretary general of the PSdeG-PSOE sent a letter to activists on Thursday in which he defends the party’s actions. Besteiro assures that the formation has not looked away and that it will fight gender-based violence “no matter who falls”. This statement contrasts with the version of those affected, disclosed by the program. Code 10 of Four. They claim to have expressed their complaints about the behavior of the former president of the Lugo Provincial Council in Besteiro, to the secretary of the Organization, Lara Méndez, and to the party leader of Lugo, Pilar García. Those mentioned deny it.
Besteiro emphasizes in the letter that he feels “pain”, “deep sadness”, “revulsion” and “deep indignation”. He expresses his “solidarity” with the victims and asks that his anonymity be respected during the processing of his complaint on the Ferraz anti-harassment channel. The socialist affirms that Tomé’s resignation from the leadership of the party in the province and from the presidency of the Provincial Council “was what he had to do”, although he adds that his until now close collaborator must also hand over the files of deputy and provincial councilor to Monforte. “This party does not remain silent, does not hide or allow itself to be intimidated. We defend equality because it is the very reason for our existence,” says Besteiro.
The leader of the Galician socialists suspended his agenda this Wednesday when the scandal broke and the letter to activists is his first statement since. This Friday he will meet with the party leadership in Santiago to analyze the case and will then appear before the press.
