British writer Sophie Kinsella, known mainly for the “Shopping Mad” book series, also adapted for the cinema, died this Wednesday in London at the age of 55 following an aggressive brain cancer, as confirmed by her family on social networks.
“We are heartbroken to announce the death this morning of our beloved Sophie (aka Maddy, aka Mom),” her loved ones wrote in a post on Instagram, where they indicated that the author died “in peace” and had spent her days “filled with her true loves”: family, music, warmth, Christmas and joy.
Under the literary pseudonym Sophie Kinsella was Madeleine Sophie Wickham, who gained worldwide fame with the book series “Shopping Mad”, about a journalist obsessed with fashion and pocket money, adapted for the big screen in 2009 under the title “Confessions of a Shopaholic”, starring actress Isla Fisher.
Kinsella’s books have sold more than 45 million copies in more than 60 countries and his work has been translated into more than 40 languages.
In April 2024, the writer announced that she had been diagnosed two years earlier with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
“We cannot imagine what life would be like without her brilliance and vitality. Despite her illness, which she endured with unimaginable courage, Sophie considers herself truly lucky to have such wonderful family and friends and to have had the extraordinary success of her writing career,” her family commented on Instagram.
Kinsella (London, 1969) was selected as author of the year by the British Book Awards in 2025 and, a year earlier, in 2024, for her latest novel, “What Does It Feels Like?” was chosen by the newspaper The New York Times as one of the hundred most remarkable books of the year.
