The Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Cortes, Félix Bolaños, accused the president of Episcopal ConferenceLuis Argüello, of break “the political neutrality of the Church” for having spoken out “in favor of the end of the current government”, and asked him respect democracy and the Executive.
In a letter, Bolaños responds to the statements made this Sunday by Argüello in the newspaper The avant-gardewhere the president of the Episcopal Conference declared that the the political situation in Spain is more “blocked” even though six months ago, due to the lack of budgets and for this reason, he asked to address “a question of trust, motion of censure or give voice to citizens.
Bolaños, in his letter, regretted that Argüello “for the second time in a short time” had spoken “in favor of the end of the current government, once again breaking the political neutrality of the Church.” “I expressly ask you to refrain from breaking its political neutrality and act with respect for democracy and government. And in this sense, I invite you to address the challenges those faced by Church and the relationship with the government in a constructive spirit and respecting all the sensitivities that exist in our country,” Bolaños said in his letter.
The minister stressed that in a first letter of June 20, he had warned Argüello that this type of “partisan statements” of the president of the Episcopal Conference “are not appropriate in a non-denominational State founded on double neutrality and respect: that of public authorities towards freedom of religion of each person and their own confessions and that of each religious confession on the holders of political power.
Bolaños also criticized Argüello for saying in his interview with La Vanguardia that his relationship with the executive was focused on “the Valley of the Fallen”, ignoring that “since the entry into force of the current Law on Democratic Memory, its name is Valle de Cuelgamuros”, and in “reparation to the victims of the abuses of the ecclesial pedophilia.
The minister added that from Argüello’s statements “it seems to be inferred that he would prefer your contact These were different political forces (Vox and PP)understanding that “a right-wing and far-right government” would be “more understanding towards the positions of its organization”. However, Bolaños clarified that this “personal preference” of Argüello “it’s not good enough to break the partisan neutrality that we should assume from the Church. »
