Former President Jair Bolsonaro is in the postoperative period after surgery to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia carried out at the DF Star Hospital, in Brasilia, this Thursday. According to the medical team, recovery includes the use of analgesics to control pain, physiotherapy sessions for early mobilization and care to prevent complications, such as deep vein thrombosis and breathing problems.
The operation began around 9:15 a.m. and ended shortly before 1:00 p.m., lasting approximately three and a half hours. The procedure took place without incident, according to doctors, and was carried out under general anesthesia. The procedure aimed to reposition the abdominal contents and strengthen the muscles in the groin area, where the weakening of the abdominal wall that characterizes inguinal hernia occurs.
Although classified as elective, surgical intervention was indicated to avoid worsening of the condition and possible clinical complications. In the case of a bilateral inguinal hernia, the problem occurs on both sides of the groin, increasing the risk of persistent pain, incarceration of the hernia, and other complications if not surgically corrected.
After the procedure, Bolsonaro was taken directly to his room, without needing to be admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). He remained awake, communicative and under continuous monitoring by the medical team.
According to doctors, the ex-president should remain hospitalized between five and seven days. The hospitalization period will serve to ensure adequate analgesia, daily clinical monitoring and progressive initiation of mobilization, considered essential for the prevention of thrombotic events and respiratory complications in the postoperative period.
The team said physiotherapy could begin in the coming days, with a focus on early mobilization and functional recovery. Additionally, Bolsonaro will remain under continuous clinical monitoring, with strict pain control and monitoring for possible signs of complications.
Along with surgery-related care, doctors are assessing the need for a new procedure to treat persistent hiccups experienced by Bolsonaro in recent months. This pathology is considered a recurring concern both for the medical team and for the former president himself.
Initially, an immediate anesthetic blockade of the phrenic nerve, responsible for stimulating the diaphragm, a muscle essential for breathing, was considered. However, after direct clinical observation, the team opted for a more conservative approach, prioritizing clinical treatment.
According to doctors, phrenic nerve block is a more invasive procedure and hence the decision was postponed. The current strategy includes intensification of drug treatment, dietary adjustments and monitoring of clinical response over the next few days. The need for possible intervention will be reassessed, possibly next week, depending on how the situation evolves.
The medical team also clarified that the hiccups could be linked to changes in the digestive system and that to date there is no indication of a neurological complication associated with the symptom. New examinations may be carried out during hospitalization, such as an endoscopy, depending on the clinical assessment.
Bolsonaro was hospitalized on Wednesday for tests and pre-operative preparation before the operation. The hospitalization was authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Court (STF), after the expertise of the federal police highlighted the need for medical intervention. According to the minister, this authorization does not prevent the execution of the sentence pronounced against the former president, sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for attempted coup d’état.
During his hospitalization, Bolsonaro is accompanied by former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro. His sons, Flávio and Carlos Bolsonaro, were in the hospital before the procedure began.
