Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) medical team reported this Monday (12/29) that the former president had 50 episodes of sleep apnea per hour before the new surgical operation, carried out this afternoon to improve his hiccups.
“Last night he underwent a polysomnography to study sleep apnea. He had practically 50 episodes of sleep apnea per hour. Including a recording chart, which shows the need for improvement in his sleep pattern, said surgeon general Cláudio Birolini, one of the doctors responsible for Bolsonaro’s health.
Bolsonaro underwent further surgery to block the left phrenic nerve, in a bid to contain the hiccups the former president is experiencing. The procedure lasted about an hour.
According to doctors who spoke to the press after the procedure, the former president had a high blood pressure attack after the operation, but his condition is stable.
According to the healthcare professionals responsible for Bolsonaro, he still needs to undergo an endoscopy in the coming days and is expected to leave the hospital on Thursday (1/1).

After the intervention, the former general director remained hospitalized for observation and monitoring of the evolution of his clinical condition. He must also continue his treatment with physiotherapy, venous thrombosis prevention measures and other rehabilitation care.
Jair Bolsonaro has been admitted to DF Star Hospital in Brasilia since Christmas Eve. He is recovering from surgery last Thursday (12/25) to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia.
Procedure
Phrenic nerve block involves injecting a local anesthetic near the nerve responsible for stimulating the diaphragm, temporarily interrupting its function in controlling hiccups.
It is a radiointervention procedure, carried out under anesthesia, the effect of which lasts between 12 and 18 hours, according to the medical team accompanying Jair Bolsonaro.
