A medical bulletin published this Sunday (28) indicates that former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) is stable and has no hiccups. He maintains postoperative care following a hernia operation, carried out on Thursday (25), at the DF Star Hospital, in Brasilia.
On Saturday (27), Bolsonaro underwent a medical procedure to control hiccups. According to the medical bulletin, the former president had another attack of hiccups last night, despite the intervention, and recorded an increase in his blood pressure.
“Yesterday evening he had new hiccups, despite the intervention carried out, as well as an increase in blood pressure. He is currently stable and has no hiccups,” specifies the bulletin published by DF Star.
“Tomorrow (29) it is planned to complete the treatment, with left phrenic nerve block, for further evaluation of the results. The patient should continue physiotherapy for rehabilitation, venous thrombosis prophylaxis measures and clinical care,” the medical bulletin also states.
The phrenic nerve block is performed by applying an anesthetic and corticosteroids to a nerve in the diaphragm, close to the cervical region, according to the former president’s medical team. The first intervention to contain the hiccups, carried out on Saturday (27), lasted between 45 minutes and 1 hour.
The former president was admitted for hernia surgery, which took place on Thursday (25).
On Saturday (27), former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro (PL) said on social media that Bolsonaro would lead the procedure to contain the hiccups. “My love just went to the surgical center to have the phrenic nerve blocked. I ask for your prayerful intercession that this procedure will be successful and bring permanent relief. It has already been nine months of struggle and anguish with daily hiccups,” he wrote.
After Bolsonaro’s hernia operation on Thursday, Claudio Birolini, one of the former president’s doctors, explained that the procedure to contain the hiccups was also being evaluated. “This anesthetic block, which is a relatively safe procedure, but which is not the standard for treating hiccups. We really have to see if it justifies the benefit, the risk,” Birolini said at the time.
The former president is serving a sentence for attempted coup d’état in the prison of the Superintendence of the Federal Police of the Federal District, in Brasilia. Bolsonaro’s hernia operation had to be authorized by STF (Supreme Federal Court) Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
