Ultrasound indicated two inguinal hernias and surgery is recommended, defense says
BRASÍLIA – Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) underwent an ultrasound this Sunday, 14, at the Superintendence of the Federal Police, in Brasilia, where he is detained. The results indicate the need for surgery, according to lawyer João Henrique Nascimento de Freitas, who is part of the legal team accompanying Bolsonaro.
Freitas said the ultrasound indicated two inguinal hernias – when there is a displacement of the intestine due to a problem with the abdominal wall in the groin.
“Exams identified two inguinal hernias and doctors recommended that he undergo surgery, the only form of definitive treatment for this condition,” he said on social media.
Bolsonaro’s lawyers requested authorization for the tests on Thursday 11 and appointed doctor Bruno Luís Barbosa Cherulli.
According to the terms of the application, it was of an “emergency nature” and the procedure would be non-invasive, would not require sedation or hospital facilities.
The former president complained of pain and discomfort. Former Rio de Janeiro city councilor Carlos Bolsonaro posted a video on social media in which his father appears sobbing in his sleep.
The carrying out of the examinations was authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of Federal Court (STF). Bolsonaro has been serving his sentence in a closed regime, in a special cell located in the premises of the PF superintendence in the Federal District, for almost a month.
First, he was sent to the scene for protective custody after violating the electronic ankle monitor and risking escape. Three days later, the trial in which he was convicted of attempted coup d’état was concluded. and he started serving his sentence 27 years in prison.
