Former President of the Republic Jair Bolsonaro (PL) left prison this Wednesday morning (12/24), around 9:29 a.m., and was then admitted to the DF Star Hospital, in Brasilia (DF), where he arrived at 9:33 a.m. Detained at the Federal Police Superintendency since November 22, Bolsonaro leaves the premises for the first time since his arrival.
Bolsonaro left the PF escorted by a convoy made up of Federal Police vehicles, as well as scouts from the Military Police (PM) and the Criminal Police, and entered the health unit through the garage. At DF Star, which is approximately 1.5 km from the PF, you will be monitored by two police officers at the door to your room, as well as security guards at the hospital entrance.
The former president is spending Christmas Eve in the hospital preparing to repair two inguinal hernias this Thursday (12/25), Christmas Day. There is no forecast of an increase yet.
Moraes’ decision
Authorization for the operation was given by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), rapporteur of the putschist processes. Moraes made this decision after the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) declared itself in favor of carrying out the surgical intervention.
The need for surgery is supported by a federal police report, submitted to the STF after Bolsonaro’s expertise identified two inguinal hernias. This Tuesday (12/23), the ex-president’s defense indicated the dates after the ex-president canceled an interview he was going to grant to the Metropolisesciting “health reasons”.
See what Moraes’ decision contains:
- Bolsonaro’s transport and security must be ensured by the federal police, in a discreet manner, and disembarkation must take place in the hospital garages;
- The federal police must first contact the director of the DF Star hospital, Dr. Allison Bruno Barcelos Borges, to agree on the terms of hospitalization;
- The federal police must provide full surveillance and security for Bolsonaro during his stay, as well as for DF Star, by keeping teams on standby. The corporation must also guarantee security and surveillance 24 hours a day, by providing at least two federal police officers at the door of the hospital room, and the teams it deems necessary inside and outside the health establishment;
- It is forbidden for computers, mobile phones or any electronic device to enter the hospital room, except obviously medical equipment, and the PF must ensure compliance with this restriction;
- The presence of Bolsonaro’s wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, is permitted as an accompanist for the entire duration of hospitalization, subject to hospital regulations; And
- Other visits can only take place with prior judicial authorization.
With authorization, Bolsonaro must carry out the operation and return to prison, to the PF Superintendence, as soon as he is medically released.
Request for surgical intervention
- On December 14, Bolsonaro underwent an ultrasound which identified two inguinal hernias.
- The former president’s doctors recommended that he undergo surgery, the only definitive treatment for this disease.
- The next day, Jair Bolsonaro’s defense asked Moraes for authorization to “urgently carry out surgical intervention”.
- Minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered the medical examinations and reports presented by the defense to be sent for analysis by experts from the Federal Police, in addition to demanding that Bolsonaro submit to an examination, which took place on December 17.
- On the 19th, Moraes authorized the procedure, after reports from the PF confirmed the need for elective surgery.
- This Tuesday (12/23), Jair Bolsonaro’s defense indicated the dates of the operation.
- Moraes, after a statement from the PGR, authorized the procedure on the dates requested by the lawyers.
The federal police report highlighted the need for elective surgical repair and authorized the procedure to be carried out, provided it was previously scheduled.
According to the report, although it was not an emergency, PF experts recommended that the intervention be carried out as soon as possible, taking into account the worsening clinical condition and the risk of complications in the event of a worsening of the clinical condition.
Bolsonaro has been in prison since November 22, after burning the electronic bracelet he wore on his ankle. On the 25th of this month, Bolsonaro began serving a prison sentence of 27 years and 3 months in the process related to the coup plot.
Inguinal hernia
The medical expertise of the National Forensic Institute of the Federal Police concluded that the former president suffered from a bilateral inguinal hernia, a condition that affects both sides of the groin area.
A hernia occurs when part of the intestine or other internal tissue “leaks” through a weak point in the abdominal muscles, forming a lump or bulge that can cause pain and discomfort.
Examinations carried out in August 2025 did not reveal the presence of hernias. In November, doctors clinically identified a one-sided hernia. Subsequent reports maintained the diagnosis, and in December, imaging tests confirmed that the disease was beginning to affect both sides of the inguinal region.
According to experts, the worsening of the disease could be linked to an increase in pressure in the abdomen, associated with episodes of persistent hiccups and chronic cough reported by Bolsonaro.
