In the first conversation he had with his father in prison after announcing that he had been chosen to run for president, Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) heard Jair Bolsonaro (PL) say that his candidacy “already worked.”
During the meeting, which took place on December 9 in the cell where Bolsonaro is detained, at the superintendence of the federal police in Brasilia, the senator also gave the former president a letter in which his brother Eduardo, currently in the United States, said he supported the decision.
According to people close to the Bolsonaro family, father and son were emotional. Flávio reported on the repercussions of the candidacy announcement and the first conversations he had. Bolsonaro, in response, patted his eldest son’s chest affectionately and said: “It already worked, it already worked. Let’s go.”
Bolsonaro only has access to open television channels in the cell of the Superintendence of the Federal Police of the Federal District, in Brasilia, where he is serving a sentence for attempted coup d’état.
On Thursday (25), Flávio published a handwritten letter from Bolsonaro in which he confirms the nomination of his eldest son to run in the elections against President Lula (PT) next year.
“I hand over the most precious thing in a father’s life: his own son for the mission of saving our Brazil,” Bolsonaro said in the letter to Brazilians read by Flávio at the door of the DF Star hospital, where the former president is hospitalized.
Bolsonaro intended to communicate the decision in an interview with the Metropoles portal – in a sort of public blessing and passing of the baton. The interview was authorized by Minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) Alexandre de Moraes, but was canceled by the former president due to alleged health problems.
As Mônica Bergamo’s column showed, the interview also divided the family. While Flávio supported the conversation, former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro and the former president’s lawyers opposed it, pointing to possible legal and political risks.
Bolsonaro underwent a new medical intervention this Saturday (27) to try to control the hiccup crisis. The medical team says he will need to be hospitalized for about a week before returning to prison.
