Arrested after being found guilty of attempted coup d’état, former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was admitted to the DF Star Hospital, in Brasilia (DF), this Wednesday 24. There he will undergo preparatory tests before undergoing a new surgical procedure. The intervention, scheduled for Thursday 25, Christmas Day, aims to correct two inguinal hernias.
This new hospitalization will be the eighth surgical intervention that Bolsonaro has faced since the knife attack suffered during the 2018 electoral campaign, in Juiz de Fora (MG).
Bolsonaro is currently serving a sentence at the Federal Police Superintendence in Brasilia. The surgical intervention planned for this week was authorized by Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes, following a request from the defense. The operation was recommended by the former president’s medical team and the need for the operation was confirmed by an expert from the Federal Police.

During a campaign event in Juiz de Fora (MG), Jair Bolsonaro suffered a knife attack and had to undergo emergency surgery. The injury reached the intestine and marked the start of a long history of health complications.
September 12, 2018
Six days later, in São Paulo, the then candidate underwent further surgery to treat an intestinal obstruction resulting from the injury. The operation lasted about an hour.
January 28, 2019
Bolsonaro underwent surgery to remove the colostomy bag, which was placed during initial procedures after the attack.
September 8, 2019
The former president underwent another operation, this time to correct an incisional hernia in the abdominal area, a problem associated with multiple previous surgeries.
September 12, 2023
On that date, the former president underwent two different procedures: the correction of a hiatal hernia, linked to gastric reflux, and the surgery of a deviated nasal septum, with the aim of improving breathing.
April 13, 2025
After reporting intense abdominal pain during an official meeting in Santa Cruz (RN), Bolsonaro was hospitalized for abdominal distension. After two days of hospitalization, already in Brasilia, he underwent a new surgical procedure which lasted approximately 12 hours. The operation was performed to remove intestinal adhesions and reconstruct the abdominal wall. The result was considered positive by the medical team.
September 14, 2025
Bolsonaro was under house arrest when he was admitted to DF Star Hospital to have skin lesions removed. Subsequent examinations identified carcinoma in two of the eight removed lesions.
December 25, 2025
This Wednesday 24, the former president was admitted to hospital for pre-operative examinations and is expected to undergo surgery on Christmas, December 25, to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia.
