Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) underwent this Wednesday (24) preparatory examinations for the bilateral surgical operation to correct an inguinal hernia, scheduled for this Wednesday morning (25), around 9 a.m. According to the medical team, he is ready to undergo the procedure.
Doctors Cláudio Birolini and Brasil Caiado, part of the medical team monitoring Bolsonaro at DF Star Hospital, reported that the former president underwent a battery of pre-operative tests, including an echocardiogram, laboratory tests and coronary angiography, which identified only small fatty plaques with no impact on the procedure. A slight alteration in kidney function was noted, already corrected by hydration, without surgical contraindication, according to the doctors.
According to them, the procedure should last between three and four hours, under general anesthesia, with the hope of remaining in anesthetic recovery for up to two hours before returning to the room.
The initial estimate is a hospitalization of five to seven days, depending on the clinical course after surgery. The procedure consists of making an incision on each side of the groin to identify the hernia, which is repositioned in the abdominal cavity, followed by reinforcement of the weakened area by the installation of a polypropylene mesh.
According to the medical team, the option of open access, and not laparoscopic or robotic techniques, is due to the former president’s multiple previous abdominal surgeries, which generated adhesions and would increase the risk of intestinal damage in minimally invasive approaches.
The team also reported that Bolsonaro has symptoms of anxiety and depression, associated with difficulty sleeping, which are monitored with medication and clinical support. They also reported episodes of hiccups.
“The president is a little depressed about the things he’s going through, quite anxious,” Caiado said. “He is well medicated. In fact, he already was, we continue the medication, and he has another type of medication that is used if necessary for (hiccup) attacks.”
During hospitalization, doctors say, an anesthetic phrenic nerve block can be evaluated to combat hiccups, a non-surgical procedure that is still being analyzed for risks and benefits.
Doctors also said the visiting regime would follow hospital rules. Doctors advise that only one family member at a time can stay with former President Jair Bolsonaro at any time, with the ability to alternate between children throughout the day. The stay of accompanying persons and visiting times will be defined by the establishment.
Previously, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), had authorized the visit of his children Carlos, Flávio, Jair Renan and Laura Bolsonaro.
