The defense of former President Jair Bolsonaro requested this Tuesday from Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), that the surgical operation to correct an inguinal hernia that the former president must treat be carried out on December 25, in Brasilia. To do this, Bolsonaro should be hospitalized this Wednesday, December 24.
Doctors accompanying former President Jair Bolsonaro detailed, in a note published last Sunday, the surgical procedure he will undergo in the coming days and indicated that hospitalization would be necessary. According to the team, the procedure was indicated after tests revealed a condition requiring surgical correction and continued medical monitoring.
Bolsonaro was diagnosed with bilateral inguinal hernia, a condition in which part of the intestine protrudes through the abdominal wall in the groin area, on both sides. The problem can cause pain, discomfort and risk of complications if not treated surgically.
Additionally, doctors reported that the former president was experiencing persistent episodes of hiccups, which were unresponsive to conventional clinical treatments, leading the team to evaluate additional intervention during hospitalization.
The surgical procedure being considered is a bilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy, a technique used to correct hernias in this region of the body. The intervention consists of repairing the weakened abdominal wall, with the aim of preventing the abdominal contents from protruding outward again.
Depending on the intraoperative assessment, surgical mesh can be used to reinforce the corrected area, a common method in this type of intervention and which helps reduce the risk of hernia recurrence.
During the same hospitalization, doctors also plan to perform an anesthetic phrenic nerve block, a strategy adopted to try to control prolonged episodes of hiccups.
The operation was authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes last Friday, after an investigation by the Federal Police revealed the need for medical intervention.
The PF’s expertise concluded that Bolsonaro should be operated on “as soon as possible”, but stressed that the intervention should be carried out “on an elective basis”. Moraes therefore considered that there was no urgency and ordered the lawyers to come up with a date.
Experts concluded that the former president suffered damage to a nerve in his torso resulting from surgery, which causes frequent hiccups. It is necessary to repair this injured area to stop the hiccups.
