Brazil recorded an increase in the number of scientific articles published in 2024 and remained in 14th position in a list with 53 other countries. The table appears in a report from publisher Elsevier and the Bori agency published this Thursday (18).
Since the first edition of the report, in 2022, the country has held the same position.
There has, however, been a change: the total number of scientific articles whose authors are linked to institutions in the Brazilian territory increased by 4.5% between 2023 and 2024. In total, there were 73,220 last year.
The balance represents an interruption of the declines observed for two consecutive years. From 2021 to 2022, there was a reduction of 8.2%. And from 2022 to 2023, 7.3%.
The ranking is led by China, followed by the United States, India, the United Kingdom and Germany.
The analysis is based on information from Scopus, one of the largest academic citation databases. Additionally, it is limited to scientific articles.
Data from 1996 to 2024 was considered linked to the 54 countries that published more than 10,000 scientific papers last year. The survey, with information collected in July of this year, adopts a minimum threshold to avoid possible statistical noise.
According to the analysis, only Russia and Ukraine recorded a reduction in the number of publications. The two nations have been at war since the one led by Vladimir Putin invaded Ukrainian territory in 2022.
The report highlights an almost constant increase in the number of scientific articles published in countries. There was a decline during the early years of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the new edition says that decline appears to have been overcome.
Brazilian institutions
The survey also covers the research institutes which published the most in 2024.
32 are listed with over a thousand published articles. Among them, only three experienced a decrease in the total number of publications: the State University of Maringá (Paraná), the Federal University of Goiás and Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Company).
The report states that the previous year the situation was almost the opposite, with only two publications showing publication growth.
Knowledge areas
According to the analysis, natural sciences are the area of greatest production in Brazil. Next come medical sciences.
The two leaders of the edition are not new, remaining in the same positions compared to previous editions.
In last position are the human sciences, which also saw their publications decrease from 2023 to 2024.
