British Prime Minister Keir Starmer discussed efforts to achieve a “just and lasting end” to the war in Ukraine with US President Donald Trump on Sunday, Starmer’s Downing Street office said in a statement.
“The two leaders began by reflecting on the war in Ukraine,” Starmer’s office said in a summary of the call, adding that they discussed “the work of countries in the so-called ‘Coalition of the Willing’ who are committed to supporting Ukraine.
“The Prime Minister updated the work of the Coalition of those prepared to support any peace agreement and ensure a just and lasting end to hostilities.”
U.S. negotiators met with Russian officials in Florida on Saturday for the final negotiations to end the conflict, as the Trump administration tries to reach an agreement on both sides.
The Miami meeting follows Friday’s U.S. talks with Ukrainian and European officials, the latest discussions on a peace plan that raised hopes for a solution to the conflict that began when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
The Downing Street report also said Starmer and Trump discussed appointing Christian Turner as ambassador to the United States after his predecessor Peter Mandelson was fired when supportive emails he sent to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein came to light.
