Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Jelyazkov announced in parliament on Thursday the resignation of his conservative-led tripartite government after massive protests on Wednesday in which tens of thousands of citizens demanded his resignation amid accusations of corruption.
“We have heard the voice of society,” declared the Prime Minister, whose government, which came to power in January, was made up of the conservative GERB party, the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the populist and protest party ITN.
Wednesday evening’s demonstration, the third called in recent days by the European opposition party PP-DB, brought together many young people and demanded the resignation of the Executive and the calling of new elections, which would be the eighth since 2021.
