Caio Bonfim is nominated for the best athlete of the year award
In his speech, the walker recalled the season he achieved in 2025, and spoke of the importance of his mother, Gianetti Bonfim, for the results obtained during the year.
“It’s a pleasure to be here at this award. I won it last year and I thought it would be the only time. So I wanted to thank you because this year has been very special, with a lot of gratitude and many people involved. No one wins anything alone,” he said.
“Athletics is the most collective individual sport there is. When I thank the COB, I thank all the people who were part of it. In sports walking, if you do not do the technique correctly, you start to be disqualified. My mother’s choice to help me with the technical part, it is the greatest success that we have had together. This union of Asian walking with European walking is what made me stand out,” he stressed.
“This year we broke the Brazilian record in five minutes and five seconds. My mother was a former athlete who won the best coach award today,” Caio added.
In 2025, Caio Bonfim won the gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in the 20 km race and won silver in the same competition in the 35 km category. In addition, Caio also won the Walking Grand Prix held in Portugal, the Brazilian Athletics Trophy and the Brazilian Walking Cup, all over a 20 km course.
