Tricolor partially defeats Cruz-Maltino 1-0 and takes the decision on penalties at the Maracanã, with 2-2 on aggregate
Fluminense entered the Copa do Brasil semi-final break with a partial victory over Vasco, 1-0, at the Maracanã. With this momentary triumph, the decision is moving towards sanctions and requires, at least according to Canobbio, an even stronger mentality for the final phase.
“We have to continue working well. We had a good first half, we had the consistency to understand the moments of the match. We had a strong mentality, we played the ball and went for it. The match is equal and so we have to continue with humility,” the Uruguayan told Globo.
Paulo Henrique scored and opened the scoring for Tricolor, the team with more possession at the start (57% against 43%). However, Vasco presented more danger and finished seven times to his rival’s four.
Fluminense takes the lead
The match started in a truncated manner, with many arguments in midfield and long balls. Vasco was in danger with shots from outside the box with Andrés Gómez and Rayanforcing Fábio to make two good saves.
Over time, Tricolor managed to organize itself, particularly on the right side, with Samuel Xavier. The relationship with Canobbio resulted in Zubeldía’s team’s best offensive moves early on.
The goal, in fact, came from the duo. Canobbio received it from Samuel Xavier and crossed it, Everaldo deflected the first ball, but hit the post. Subsequently, Paulo Henrique tried to move away and ended up scoring on the counter.
The first stage ended with 14 fouls, seven on each side, and four cards distributed.
Brazil Cup Final
Corinthians eliminated Cruzeiro, on penalties, in the other semi-final. The duel took place earlier at the Neo Química Arena and ended with São Paulo winning 5-4 on penalties, after losing 2-1 in regulation time.
