A Russian general linked to operations in Ukraine died yesterday in the explosion of a bomb placed in his car in Moscow, Russian authorities announced yesterday. The Investigative Committee, charged with investigating serious crimes, said it was investigating whether the attack that killed Fanil Sarvarov was linked to Ukraine’s security services. Sarvarov headed the army’s operational training directorate. The car exploded as he was leaving a parking space. Svetlana Petrenko, a spokeswoman for the institution investigating the attack, said investigators were collecting expert evidence, interviewing witnesses and analyzing security camera footage. Myrotvorets, an unofficial Ukrainian website that maintains a database of people described as war criminals or traitors, updated its Sarvarov page to report that the 56-year-old had been “liquidated.” In the photo, the soldier’s car destroyed in the parking lot.
