King Charles III announced this Friday that he will be able to reduce his cancer treatment for next year thanks to different factors, such as early detection of the disease, rapid intervention by the health system and compliance with medical recommendations.
“Today I can share the good news: through early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to medical recommendations, my own cancer treatment schedule will be reduced over the coming year,” the monarch said in a message to the nation released by Buckingham Palace.
Carlos III, who stressed that this is a “testimony of the notable progress made in the treatment of cancer in recent years”, recalled that early diagnosis “saves lives”. “I have heard this message repeatedly during my visits to cancer centers across the country,” he said.
In this sense, he emphasized that he himself is aware of the “difference” of detecting cancer at an early stage. “This has allowed me to continue to lead a full and active life, even during treatment,” the monarch said.
“I also learned something that concerns me deeply: at least nine million people in our country are not up to date with available cancer screening tests, which means at least nine million opportunities for early diagnosis are being missed,” he added.
The message is part of the campaign organized by the NGO United Against Cancer in collaboration with the Cancer Research Center and with the support of the British National Health Service. Carlos III returned to public office in April despite continuing weekly treatment for cancer, an illness diagnosed in February 2024.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer described his message as “powerful”. “I know I speak for the entire country when I say how happy I am that your cancer treatment will be reduced next year. Early detection of cancer saves lives,” he said in a social media post.
