The Integrated Care Management of Albacete, dependent on the Health Service of Castile-La Mancha, is moving forward with the strategy of reduce the use of antibiotics. Thus, recently the team of the PROA Patient Community of Albacete (PROA-C) obtained the Basic category in … the process of self-certification of PROA equipment as part of the National Antimicrobial Resistance Plan (PRAN). The professional María Antonia Sepúlveda Berrocal, as autonomous representative of the PROA of Castilla-La Mancha, was responsible for carrying out this validation.
With this progress, the Management of Albacete joins the management of Alcázar de San Juan and Guadalajara in this process of certification of the PROA community teams in the region. As stated by the coordinator of PROA-C, Mr. Ángeles Lloret Callejo, “this represents a commitment to adopt a common work system, evaluated and approved both by the National Antibiotic Resistance Plan and by the Ministry of Health of Castile-La Mancha, which is very involved in it”.
Additionally, “obtaining self-certification involves the first step necessary to obtain basic level PROA-C certification, which must occur within one year of this date.” To do this, they must meet 18 mandatory requirements required for this call, three of which have already been validated to obtain self-certification.
The Albacete Integrated Care Management group PROA-C was formed in May 2022 and is composed of a multidisciplinary team from the area of Primary Care and Hospital Care, with professionals from medicine, nursing, pediatrics, dentistry, pharmacy, internal medicine, microbiology, emergency and medicine from the socio-health field.
A full team promoting this program to improve quality of care and patient safety and representing the Commission on Infections and Antimicrobial Policy. “The main mission is to contribute to improving the use of antimicrobials, to achieve the most optimal health outcomes, helping to preserve the effectiveness and guarantee the safety of antimicrobials in an effective manner,” explained the coordinator.
Likewise, the team insisted that it aspires to “be a reference in promoting the appropriate use of antibiotics in the community, contributing to the reduction of antimicrobial resistance and the improvement of the quality of care through a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach based on the best scientific evidence”.
Work based on “teamwork and with teams”, “patient-centered” and “responsible and ethical management” and a “clear commitment to quality and safety”. For these purposes, the Albacete PROA-C team prepares its annual report where the objectives and proposals for the following year are monitored.
According to this document, once the data has been analyzed, “the trend in the rate of antibiotics in general medicine and pediatrics has been on the rise since 2021”. With this conclusion, the need to continue implementing programs aimed at achieving better use of antimicrobials at the community level becomes evident.
Antibiotic resistance at alarming levels
The World Health Organization has warned that Antibiotic resistance has reached alarming levels in many parts of the world it is one of the main public health problems.
Meanwhile, the PROA-C team of the Albacete Directorate continues its work and has prepared two informative pills, one aimed at the pediatric population on the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of Pharyngo Tonsillitis (FAA), and another on the treatment of Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) in adults. These informative documents will be deposited in primary care centers in the area, as well as in continuing care points (PAC).
