Ilia Topuria, two-time UFC champion, announced this weekend that he would not defend his belt in the first quarter of 2026. In a statement posted on social media, the Spaniard-Georgian with 17 undefeated victories revealed that he was facing an “extremely difficult” personal crisis, linked to his separation from Giorgina Uzcategui Badell, mother of his youngest daughter.

The UFC, according to the fighter, understood the seriousness of the situation and confirmed that the interim featherweight belt would be contested at UFC 324 in January. Topuria claims that in recent months he began to experience pressure and threats related to allegations of abuse that he said would be dropped in exchange for money.
The champion called the actions “intolerable” and said all incidents were documented – including audios, messages, statements and videos already submitted to the courts. He maintains that the case involves not only attempted extortion, but also tampering with evidence, theft of money and personal effects, in addition to threats.
“When life presents us with situations that threaten our peace, our family and our reputation, there comes a time when we must defend ourselves,” he wrote. The fighter said he tried to keep the matter confidential to protect his children, but concluded that silence would allow “the lie to continue to grow.”
The featherweight champion formally appealed to justice to rule on the separation process and, as he said, to prove the truth of the facts. He also said he had full confidence in the justice system and stressed that its values have always been discipline, respect and honesty. “Everyone who knows me knows that I have never resorted to violence against anyone,” he stressed.
Although the UFC has not detailed the return timelines, the organization has chosen to open the interim belt — a move that has a big sporting impact on the division. Topuria’s departure comes at the best time of his career, after winning the title in dominant fashion and cementing himself as one of the biggest names in world MMA.
The fighter concluded his statement by asking that there be no speculation about his private life: “Out of respect for my children and the legal process, I will make no further statements. I only ask that the privacy of my family be respected during this difficult time.”
