Chinese automaker’s model could be first production vehicle with bags surrounding occupants’ heads
Ah, the Chinese market and its particularities. Some are unnecessary exaggerations, but others are fascinating innovations in technology and security – as in the case of Luxeed V9.
The luxury brand’s minivan born from the partnership between Chery and Huawei could be the world’s first mass-produced vehicle with seat-mounted helmet airbags. The technology was developed by Yanfeng and presented in 2023, but will only now reach a volume model.
According to sources in China, the Luxeed V9’s seats will be retracted to a position considered safe in the event of a collision. The helmet airbag will deploy at the same time, as will the side airbags.
Yanfeng’s system receives signals from ADAS to anticipate your movements with the required agility. In the event of a collision, the airbag promises to reduce the whiplash effect and compensate for the forces applied to the lower back.
Yanfeng, which provides technology for the Luxeed V9, offers solutions to other automakers. Examples? BMW, Volkswagen, General Motors, Toyota, BYD, Stellantis, GAC and Geely – all with market share, you see, in Brazil.
According to local press, the Luxeed V9 will arrive on the Chinese market in the first half of 2026 to be the brand’s most luxurious vehicle. The minivan is built on Chery’s E0X modular architecture, the basis of the manufacturer’s other models. Its length must exceed 5.3 meters.
The Luxeed V9 will adopt an 800V system and Qiankun Advanced Driving System (ADS), an advanced driving system developed by Huawei. The minivan is now ready for level 3 autonomous driving.
The luxury model will have pure electric (EV) and electric with range extender (REEV) options. Batteries for all versions will be supplied by CATL.
It is worth remembering that Luxeed was born from the coast of Huawei and Chery. It currently has two models in its portfolio: the S7 sedan and the R7 SUV. From January to November, according to data from China EV DataTracker, 81,391 brand vehicles were sold.
