Kast, after voting in Paine: “Today is a great day for Chile”
The far-right and opposition candidate, José Antonio Kast, voted this Sunday in the second round of the presidential election which pits him against the left-wing candidate, Jeannette Jara. The former MP financed a school in Paine, south of Santiago de Chile. “For me, it’s very exciting to be in the country where I was born,” he said.
Kast was optimistic about Election Day. “Today is a great day for Chile, like all election days. It is the day of citizenship, not the day of politics,” he said. The candidate also joked about the weather in the central zone, which dawned with cloudy skies and rain. “Today the weather is cloudy, but in the afternoon the sun will rise,” he said.
The candidate also responded to the statements of President Gabriel Boric, who said he would respect the institutional tradition of the winner’s independent change of command. “Chile has a tradition and I am very clear that whoever wins, whether it is Jeannette Jara or me, will be the president of all Chileans,” he said.
Kast also mentioned a complaint filed by the Jara command, which accuses the gas company Lipigas of spreading a message in its favor through its customers’ mobile application. “I don’t know the subject (…) but if there have been problems in public institutions, there may be problems in private institutions,” he expressed.
The Republican also spoke of the high expectations his campaign has raised for his eventual government. “We are going to give our lives to rebuild our homeland, that is why we appeal for unity to solve the small problems that affect citizens, but this requires a small degree of legislative unity. It will also depend on the collaboration of parliamentarians in the Chamber of Deputies with the Senate,” he said.
