MADRID, December 30 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Chinese government called for calm on Tuesday and called for increased dialogue in response to the alleged attack that Ukrainian forces launched the day before against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence in Novgorod, a claim denied by kyiv and a reason for Moscow to rethink the negotiation.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian asked the parties to avoid further extension of the conflict, escalation of hostilities and to refrain from any provocation to create the necessary conditions to achieve “a political solution to the crisis”, reports the Global Times.
For their part, other leaders in the region such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi or his Pakistani counterpart Shehbaz Sharif have also expressed their concern and asked the parties to show restraint so as not to ruin the negotiations.
“The ongoing diplomatic efforts offer the most viable path to ending hostilities and achieving peace. We urge everyone involved to remain focused on these efforts and avoid any action that could undermine them,” Modi said in a post on his X account.
For his part, for Sharif, “this atrocious act constitutes a serious threat to peace, security and stability”, especially at a time when negotiations are taking place. Pakistan condemned the alleged attack and expressed solidarity with President Putin and the Russian people.
“We reiterate our firm rejection of all forms of violence and all acts aimed at undermining security and threatening peace,” Sharif wrote in X.
The day before, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov denounced that Ukrainian forces had launched up to 91 drones on the night of December 28 to 29 – although they were intercepted – against the presidential residence of Vladimir Putin in Novgorod, in the north-west of Russia.
Lavrov stressed that these events will not remove Russia from the negotiating table with the United States, although they could change Moscow’s positions in this area.
