The Chinese government has alleged that Washington is using unsubstantiated allegations of missile deployments to justify strengthening its arsenal, an issue they see as a direct threat to global stability. According to the state newspaper Global Times, Chinese authorities indicate that the US’s repetition of these statements is a tactic to facilitate the modernization of its nuclear power and not to engage in the international disarmament process.
During a press conference this Tuesday, Lin Jian, spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, called on the US government to respect its nuclear arms control commitments and promote disarmament at the international level. Lin’s comments came after Washington officials denounced Beijing for allegedly deploying a hundred intercontinental ballistic missiles in Mongolia, an accusation China denies and calls exaggerated, according to a Global Times publication.
Lin Jian emphasized that the United States continues to have the largest nuclear arsenal in the world, which is why he believes it is urgent that the country fulfills its responsibilities at the international level. “The United States must significantly reduce its arsenal to create conditions that will encourage other nuclear states to join this disarmament process,” the spokesman said, quoted by Chinese state media. Lin added that Washington’s failure to take leadership and initiative in arms control negotiations is hampering joint efforts to limit the development and proliferation of nuclear weapons.
As the Global Times reported, Lin Jian insisted that recent US statements were baseless and part of a strategy aimed at finding excuses to speed up the modernization of the US nuclear arsenal. For the Chinese Foreign Ministry, this position threatens the strategic balance and undermines the foundations of global security. Lin called on the international community to assess the situation objectively and not be influenced by disinformation campaigns, the media said.
The official also highlighted Washington’s unwillingness to engage in serious arms control negotiations, which he said illustrates a lack of real interest in multilateral disarmament. China insists that a significant reduction in the U.S. nuclear arsenal would be an essential step to promote a broader disarmament process that includes other powers with nuclear capabilities.
According to the Global Times, there are concerns in Beijing that the continued modernization of US nuclear weapons systems could upset the existing fragile balance and trigger a new global arms race. The Chinese authorities reiterate their position that any serious discussion on nuclear disarmament must begin with recognition of the special responsibility incumbent on the countries with the largest arsenals. Lin again called on the United States to take immediate and concrete steps to reduce its arsenal and advance disarmament efforts, noting the importance of transparency and international cooperation in this area.
Global Times stated that for China, effective compliance with international treaties and commitments related to nuclear arms control has a direct impact on global security and stability. Beijing reiterates that a constructive and responsible stance by the United States would be key to encouraging other nuclear states to join collective disarmament initiatives. The official Chinese position calls for a deep review of U.S. policy and the abandonment of “tactics” that Xi Jinping’s government says are hampering progress in reducing nuclear risks.
The press conference ended with Lin Jian’s request that the international community remain vigilant against any movement that could lead to an escalation of tensions or an increase in the dangers associated with nuclear weapons.
