The Chinese government accuses Washington of a “violation of international law” through what it describes as the United States’ “arbitrary seizure of another country’s ships.” The country has just seized a second ship carrying oil from Venezuela.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a news conference on Monday, December 22, that his country “systematically rejects illegal unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law and do not have the approval of the United Nations Security Council.”
Support for Venezuela’s position
Lin stressed that China “rejects any action that violates the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and threatens the sovereignty and security of other countries; and opposes any unilateral intimidation.”
“Venezuela has the right to independently develop mutually beneficial cooperation with other countries,” the spokesman added. Additionally, Lin assured that the “international community understands and supports Venezuela’s position in safeguarding its legitimate rights and interests.”
