China’s Parliament approved revisions to the Foreign Trade Law, incorporating certain provisions into the document to protect national sovereignty, security and economic and social development interests, the official Xinhua News Agency reported on Saturday (27).
The revised law, approved at a session of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, will take effect on March 1, 2026. It is the second major change since it was promulgated in 1994, according to Xinhua.
“In implementing related reform measures, the review adds provisions to advance China’s efforts to actively align with high-level international economic and trade rules, as well as participate in the formulation of international trade and economic standards,” the Chinese agency report said.
According to Xinhua, the changes strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights and establish a system to assist trade adjustments, aiming to stabilize supply chains.
The review also expands and improves China’s legal framework for external trade disputes, while supplementing and improving corresponding countermeasures.
The new version of the Foreign Trade Law will consist of 11 chapters. China is reforming its legislation to increase its competitiveness and stimulate the development of high-quality foreign trade, in a context of intensifying global tensions and evolving international standards and tariff rules.
