The city of São Paulo recorded this Christmas Thursday (25), six days before New Year’s Eve, the highest temperature of the year for the capital and the highest of the month since 1943, the start of the historic series.
Two records were set at Mirante de Santana, maintained by Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology), north of the city. In the first, at 3 p.m., the thermometers indicated 35.7ºC. Shortly after, at 4 p.m., the temperature rose to 35.9ºC.
Until then, the highest temperature of the year for the capital had been 35.1°C, recorded on October 6. The record for the month was recorded on December 3, 1998, when thermometers showed 35.6°C in the capital.
The heat is expected to persist over the next few days: Inmet estimates a maximum of 34ºC on Sunday (28), 33ºC on Saturday and 35ºC this Friday (26).
Thursday’s record could still be surpassed on Monday (29), when thermometers could record a maximum of 37ºC, according to Inmet. If this is confirmed, it will be one of the hottest days in the history of the capital of São Paulo, the hottest having taken place in October 2014, with 37.8ºC.
The trend of hot days is accompanied by the presence of a hot and humid air mass that continues to act with high intensity on the southeastern region of Brazil, guaranteeing sunny days, with temperatures well above average in the afternoon over the capital São Paulo and neighboring cities in the metropolitan region.
Rain is also forecast for this weekend, indicates the CGE (Climate Emergency Management Center) of São Paulo City Hall.
According to the agency, precipitation is expected to occur between mid-afternoon and early evening between Friday and Sunday. The forecast includes the possibility of heavy rain, with potential flooding and gusty winds.
Moderate rains are expected to continue on Monday due to the passage of a cold front off the coast of São Paulo.
According to the CGE, the sweltering weather is expected to continue until Tuesday. On Wednesday (31), in turn, the extended forecasts announce a sky with many clouds, no rain and pleasant temperatures.
