Cinema attendance in Spain declines again for the second year in a row with Spanish films below 80 million euros

The evolution of the box office showed irregular behavior throughout the year. While the first half closed positively, with an increase of 3% compared to 2024, the second half will close with a provisional decline of 16% (data as of December 29), weighed down mainly by the results of October (-28%) and November (-31%), whose results this year were far from what they usually bring to the overall box office.

The best opening of the year was “Avatar: Fire and Ash”, released on December 19, with 6.2 million euros during its opening weekend. The best weekend of the year took place during the second week of theatrical release of James Cameron’s film, from December 26 to 28, with gross receipts of 9.9 million euros.

The busiest week of the year was recorded from May 30 to June 5, with a total of 2.08 million viewers. Finally, the busiest day of the year was July 2 with 554,244 spectators. The 10 provinces with the highest number of spectators were: Madrid (21.5%), Barcelona (13.7%), Valencia (6.5%), Alicante (4.1%), Seville (3.7%), Malaga (3.7%), Murcia (3.5%), Vizcaya (2.5%), Balearic Islands (2.5%) and Cádiz (2.3%).

“Lilo and Stitch” and “Father there is no more than 5”, kings of the box office

The new part of the saga “Father there is no more”, directed by Santiago Segura, is once again at the top of the national cinema ranking, followed by “El Cautivo” and “Los Domingos”. Spanish cinema closes 2025 with a market share of 19% (the same as in 2024) with a total of 12 million spectators and a box office of 78 million euros. In 2024, Spanish films attracted 13.6 million spectators and grossed 85.6 million euros.
