The Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo issued a severe storm warning in the capital of São Paulo and cities in the metropolitan region after lightning, strong winds and hail were recorded early in the afternoon of this Monday (8).
The alert recommends people seek a safe place to shelter. According to the agency, the most severe weather conditions are due to the formation of an extratropical cyclone in southern Brazil.
“This system is expected to directly influence the climate of São Paulo, bringing heavy rains, very strong gusts of wind and the possibility of lightning and hail to all regions of the state,” he says. These conditions are expected to last until Thursday (11).
Also according to Civil Defense, the most intense rains are expected to occur on Tuesday (9) throughout the state, with greater volumes in the regions bordering Paraná, in the central region of the state and on the coast of São Paulo.
“The combination of intense rains and waterlogged soils can cause flooding, flash floods and landslides, particularly in the most vulnerable areas,” it warns.
On Wednesday (1), Civil Defense warns of wind gusts that could exceed 90 km/h. “This type of wind increases the risk of falling trees, branches and fragile structures, in addition to being able to cause temporary interruptions in the power supply.”
From Thursday, the cyclone will begin to move away and reduce the risk of storms. Nevertheless, isolated wind gusts could still occur in regions like Campinas, the São Paulo metropolitan region, Baixada Santista and Vale do Paraíba.
The crisis office will be activated during the most critical period of the alert. From 8 a.m. this Tuesday 9, Sabesp, Artesp and Arsesp will meet at the Emergency Management Center (CGE) of Civil Defense.
Data from the CGE (Emergency Management Center) of the São Paulo City Hall indicates that the city of São Paulo has already recorded 7.8 mm of rain since the beginning of December until this Sunday, which is equivalent to approximately 4.2% of what is forecast for the month.
