TNT Sports has defined a new stage in its sports content distribution strategy in South America from 2027. In fact, with the victory during the tender process, the channel will begin broadcasting for free, on its YouTube channel, a wide range of competitions organized by Conmebol.
DEntering the rights cycle that extends until 2030, the agreement guarantees TNT Sports the live broadcast of Copa Sudamericana matches, in addition to showing the best moments of the Libertadores and Recopa. The program also includes Women’s Libertadores, Under-20s, Futsal (men’s and women’s), Men’s Beach Football and Tour e-Libertadores.
The broadcaster’s idea is based on leveraging the channel’s reach, which has around 12.5 million subscribers, to elevate it to one of the largest audiences among sports channels in the country. The new consumption format calls for changes and, therefore, TNT Sports intends to have a strategy for distributing free content on YouTube.
Conmebol defines the holders
The main change in the broadcast agreements of South American tournaments occurred precisely when SBT was exchanged for TNT Sports during the Copa Sudamericana. In closed television, ESPN has retained the rights and will continue to broadcast it on Disney+.
Not anymorefor Libertadores, everything remains as is: Globo on open signal and ESPN on closed signal, with games also on Disney+. Recopa will also follow the same model, with the respective broadcasters on open and syndicated channels.
Business context
Recently, Questions have been raised about a possible relationship between TNT Sports’ digital expansion and negotiations involving Netflix and Warner Bros. assets. Discovery (WBD). When contacted, the channel indicated that it did not comment on subjects related to the structure of the company.
Previously released information from Warner itself indicates that the deal with Netflix does not include sports rights in the United States. These assets will be separated into a spin-off and brought together under the Discovery Global Networks brand.
The package which encompasses operations in the UK and Latin America, including Brazil, is expected to migrate to Netflix, along with the Eurosport on British territory.
