Timão faces Cruzeiro in the semi-final of the national competition
Summary
Corinthians are looking to overcome their recent Copa do Brasil elimination record, facing Cruzeiro in the semi-final, with their focus on winning their fourth title and improving the club’s financial situation.
Corinthians have won the Copa do Brasil trophy three times in their history: 1995, 2002 and 2009. In recent years, however, Timão’s celebrations in Brazilian football’s main knockout competition have given way to “almost”, with two defeats in the semi-finals and one in the final.
This time, the “ghost” of the semi-final will have to scare away against Cruzeiro, with the first match of the clash scheduled for this Wednesday 10, at 9:30 p.m. (Brasilia time), at Mineirão, in Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais). The return duel will take place on Sunday 14, at 6 p.m., at the NeoQuímica Arena, in São Paulo.
It was precisely at this stage that Alvinegro fell to Flamengo and São Paulo, respectively, in 2024 and 2023. The competition’s biggest recent pain, however, is the defeat to Rubro-Negro in the 2022 decider.
More than the desire to chase away the ghost of the almost and reach the fourth championship, the Corinthians have in the competition a hope of lightening the bills in the final stretch of the season. With the semi-finalists’ campaign, the Parque São Jorge club has a cumulative amount of R$20,616,750, taking into account the prizes since entering the third phase of the competition. The biggest bonuses, however, go to the finalist teams.
If he passes Cruzeiro, regardless of the outcome of the decision, Corinthians will benefit from an additional guarantee of R$33,075,000, which is the prize awarded to the runner-up in the competition. In case of title, the final price amounts to R$77,175,000. In other words, if they win their fourth title, Timão will finish the Copa do Brasil with a total prize pool of R$97.7 million.
In addition to the meeting between Corinthians and Cruzeiro, the other team in the semi-final will have the Rio classic between Fluminense and Vasco da Gama, who will face each other this Thursday 11 and Sunday 14.
