Corinthians’ qualification for the Copa do Brasil final represented immediate financial relief for the club. With his place secured after the semi-final penalty shootout, Timão secured, at minimum, the tournament runner-up prize and significantly increased his earnings in the competition.
By adding up the sums accumulated since the start of the campaign, Corinthians has already obtained R$53,691,750 in prize money. Before eliminating Cruzeiro, the club had pocketed R$20.6 million for the previous four phases. The decision added another 33.075 million reais to the black and white coffers.
The final, scheduled for the 17th and 21st, can further increase this amount. So, if they win the title, Corinthians will receive R$77.175 million just for this victory, which would bring the total collected from the Copa do Brasil to R$97,791,750. However, even in the least favorable scenario, with the second, the final figure is already assured at just over 53.7 million reais.
Money welcome at Corinthians
The resources come at a sensitive time for the Parque São Jorge club. After all, Corinthians is going through a period of serious financial crisis, with a debt approaching 2.7 billion reais. The board of directors relies both on funds from the Brazilian Championship, transferred by the Liga Forte União, and on prizes from the Copa do Brasil to honor its commitments and organize the end-of-season cash flow.
Among the most pressing outstanding questions is the debt owed to Mexican Santos Laguna, regarding the signing of defender Félix Torres. After all, the debt led to a transfer ban imposed in August, which prevents new players from signing up. President Osmar Stabile reiterated that he was working to resolve the outstanding issue and reverse the sanction this month.
