Atlético de Madrid has launched the process so that its partners can choose the footballers who deserve a plaque on the Paseo de las Leyendas of the Metropolitan Stadium, an old requirement that, among other things, will put an end to the controversial plaque of Thibaut Courtois, the most attacked since the inauguration of the now called Paseo de los Players Centenarios. This format – awarding a plaque to all players with more than 100 matches in the red and white jersey – did not convince supporters, and pressure pushed the club to change the electoral system. Thus, it will be the 151,831 current members, all age categories, who will select the future legends from a group of 200 notable players in the history of the club. On this list, it must be emphasized, Courtois and Joao Félix do not appear, two footballers who certainly meet the criterion of 100 matches, but who do not have the support of the stands. On the other hand, there are other names like Falcao or Luis Suárez, who, without reaching the status of centenarians, have nevertheless acquired enough merit to be considered legends. There also remains Agüero, another player whose current plate has suffered attacks on occasion. In the last block of the list also appear several former Atlético players: Priscila Borja, Ángela Sosa, Amanda, Meseguer, Ludmila and Jenni Hermoso. The choice of these 200 names was entrusted to the Atlético Social Commission, which divided them into four different historical stages, with the intention of representing all eras of the club, from 1903 to the present day. According to Atlético itself, the players were selected “after a detailed analysis taking into account various factors, such as qualitative merit, red and white values, recognition and legacy between generations, the historical moments they experienced and their behavior towards the club and its supporters.” Each member will be able to vote for their five favorite players in each of the four time slots, giving a score from 1 to 5 (5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point). In total, each participant will choose twenty footballers from the list. Players still active in the first team are excluded from the vote. In other words, Koke, Griezmann and Oblak do not enter the process. Their integration into Paseo de las Leyendas will be done in the future on the proposal of the Social Commission or the club itself, provided that they have left the entity or that they put an end to their sporting career. Voting will remain open until January 5 at 7:00 p.m. The footballers most supported by the members will be part of the renovated Paseo de las Leyendas.
