The actions of an on-duty criminal police officer prevented an escape plan in the Gericinó prison complex, in the western zone of Rio de Janeiro, in the early hours of Sunday (12/21). According to the Secretariat of the Prison Administration (Seap), this clumsy action prevented the entry of illicit material.
According to Seap, the plan was developed with the support of an external group to benefit inmates at Nelson Prison in Hungary. However, the men working outside ended up in the wrong unit. They were spotted on Sunday around Lemos Brito prison around 3:15 a.m. (Brasilia time).

The judicial police officer who was on duty noticed the suspicious movement and fired a warning shot into the air, which caused the group to disperse.
During searches of the area, officers located a bag containing four discs used in metal structure sawing tools and an improvised ladder. Already inside the unit, a cut chain was identified, reinforcing suspicions that the escape attempt was already underway.
Seap reported that the incident “integrates the ongoing surveillance, monitoring and control actions carried out throughout the state prison system, with an emphasis on preserving order and protecting society.”
