An accident involving a passenger bus in eastern Mexico has cast a shadow over the Christmas celebrations of a handful of families. The incident left at least 10 people dead and 32 injured, including elderly people and minors, when the vehicle overturned in a ravine in the town of Zontecomatlán, Veracruz, on Wednesday evening. City hall authorities updated the number of deaths, which now stands at nine adults and one minor.
The Estrella Blanca Group, the company responsible for the means of transport, clarified that the “incident” occurred in one of its connection units on the road that goes from Mexico City to Chicontepec, a town located in the Huasteca of Veracruz. The unit left the Mexican capital, but had an accident moments before reaching its destination, in the community of Rancho Nuevo, located on the border with Hidalgo. The bus lost control and plunged into a ravine, local media reported.

According to the statement released by the company, emergency and rescue organizations activated protocols and moved to the site to provide immediate attention. At the same time, the transport company, he explained, coordinated support efforts to take care of the passengers concerned and offered its collaboration to local authorities. “Our priority at all times is the safety, well-being and rapid care of our passengers. Therefore, the care protocols remain activated, reinforcing the presence of emergency teams and resources necessary to guarantee an adequate response to the situation,” we can read in the information sheet.
The authorities of the Zontecomatlán City Hall published on their official networks the list of names of the 32 injured who were transferred to different hospitals in Veracruz and Hidalgo. They also indicated that they were working in coordination with the governments of the two states and with the support of resident volunteers to transfer the injured to health centers. “We inform the general public of the origin and location of the injured transferred to the various hospitals in the region and that, as indicated by Governor Rocío Nahle, they are receiving the best and fastest care,” we read in the publication. Authorities have opened an investigation into the causes of the incident and continue to confirm the names of the 10 people who died.
