At the end of year lunch of a group of criminals from São Paulo, which took place last week, the common comment of all was that the STF is like Caesar’s wife, it is not enough to be, it has to appear honest. To this end, during informal conversations over lunch, consensus emerged on the need to protect the image of the Supreme Court. Edson Fachin’s proposal to adopt a code of conduct could therefore be a good way forward.
Like a good lawyers’ lunch, it was time for speeches. Among the speakers, Dora Cavalcanti, Flavia Rahl, Pierpaolo Bottini, Fábio Tofic Simantob and Alberto Zacharias Toron.
In fact, it was Toron who led the chorus in defending the right of lawyers to return to oral arguments in court. In recent times, oral arguments in court have been virtually eliminated, with exceptions left to judges and ministers to make.
Explains one of the lawyers present at the lunch:
— When the defense no longer has this public and transparent access, all kinds of opportunistic lawyers have the opportunity to sell obscure access to justice.
Or, one might add, making room for expeditions to inappropriate locations, such as during air travel.
