Democrats on the Oversight Committee of the United States House of Representatives released this Friday (12) a new batch of files on the estate of tycoon Jeffrey Epstein, convicted of child abuse, which includes photographs of President Donald Trump.
Some images show the Republican posing for a photo with a group of six women and another with Epstein, who died in 2019. Former President Bill Clinton, filmmaker Woody Allen and strategist Steve Bannon, a former Trump adviser, also appear in photos with Epstein in the new filings.
The U.S. House of Representatives committee has received documents it requested as part of efforts to investigate Epstein’s alleged sex trafficking. MPs aim to dispel doubts about the scale of the crimes and the death of the financier.
A spokeswoman for Republican lawmakers on the committee told The Wall Street Journal that they had received more than 95,000 images and that “Democrats are cherry-picking photos and making targeted edits to create a false narrative about President Trump.”
Democrats had already released a copy of what was believed to be a letter from Trump to Epstein in September. The Wall Street Journal previously revealed the letter’s existence in July this year, saying the note was part of a memorial album organized by Ghislaine Maxwell, the tycoon’s girlfriend convicted of helping him sexually abuse teenage girls.
In November, after months of attrition and resistance, Trump gave in to pressure from the Republican Party base and released the investigative files. The president signed the law approved almost unanimously by Congress, ordering the Justice Department to release all unclassified documents relating to the case. The 30-day period ends next Friday (19).
Trump, whose relationship with Epstein has been explored by critics and supporters, has long fueled conspiracy theories about the abuser who cultivated many wealthy and powerful friends — Epstein was convicted of sex crimes in Florida state court in 2008. He was arrested on similar but more serious charges in 2019, when he died in prison.
Since the Republican returned to power, this issue has become one of the few weak points for him, especially for some of his more radical supporters, unhappy with Trump’s statements and the government’s actions on this issue.
Trump claims he never had any connection to Epstein’s alleged crimes and has called the affair a “Democratic hoax,” used to distract from what would be the positives of his administration and the failures of the opposition.
