Volante asks to leave Botafogo and settle with Palmeiras. The teams have competed for titles in recent years
Marlon Freitas’ impending transfer from Botafogo to Palmeiras continues to have repercussions on the Brazilian football scene. The topic was analyzed by former player and current commentator of Grupo Globo, Denílson, who described the movement as negative for the black and white club and very positive for the São Paulo team.
Present at the Maracanã this Saturday (27), where he participated in the traditional All-Star Gamea charity event organized by Zico, Denílson was blunt in commenting on the negotiation. For him, Botafogo loses more than it gains by trading one of its main leaders with a direct opponent in national competitions.
“For Botafogo, it is not good to sell a player of his caliber, of his leadership, to a rival. They will face each other and Marlon Freitas will certainly try, obviously, to defend the Palmeiras jersey in the same way that he defended that of Botafogo,” said the commentator in a conversation with journalists.
Captain and key player in the black and white midfield, Marlon Freitas has established himself as a technical and leadership reference within the squad. The possible departure of the player therefore represents not only a sporting loss, but also a symbolic one for Botafogo. It is worth remembering that recently he received a flag in his honor from fans.
On the other hand, Denílson highlighted Palmeiras’ success in signing the 30-year-old midfielder. According to him, the club led by Abel Ferreira signals a slight change in strategy by betting on a more experienced athlete, capable of immediately adding leadership to the group.
“For Palmeiras, I think it’s a great signing. It changes the philosophy a bit. Palmeiras has hired younger players to sell in the future. Marlon Freitas is already an experienced player,” Denílson analyzed.
Rivalry between clubs
The commentator also contextualized Palmeiras’ need in the sector, citing Aníbal Moreno’s drop in performance and the search for more balance and command in midfield.
“Palmeiras has experienced players in key positions. Aníbal’s production has dropped a lot, and this may have sparked interest in someone for this role. The name surprises me, because Palmeiras usually looked outside the Brazilian market. If everything goes well, Palmeiras will earn a lot,” Denílson added.
Negotiations between Botafogo and Palmeiras are going well, with only contractual adjustments left to seal the deal. Therefore, if confirmed, Marlon Freitas will strengthen a direct rival, further increasing the recent rivalry between the clubs and promising new chapters on the pitch.
